(Matt 28:19-20 )
2. It is SYMBOLIC! (Something we do on the outside to show what has happened on the inside)
A. We are baptized in water to show that our sins are washed away ( Acts 22:16 ) and rose to new life ( Rom 6:4 ); you tell a gang by its colors, you tell a Christian publicly by baptism!
B. We are immersed (dunked) to symbolize the death of our old selfish person.
We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.
C. We come up out of the water which is a symbol of the resurrection of the new us.
(2Cor 5:17 ) the old has gone, the new
has come!
3. It is an IDENTIFICATION with Christ!
; why was Jesus baptized; 1. To show others believers to do so ( 1Pet 2:21 ) 2. To support John ( Matt 3:14-15 ) 3. Reference to death, burial, resurrection ( Rom 6:4 ) 4. God announces who Jesus is ( Matt 3:17 )
4. Water baptism DOES NOT save you, or is NOT necessary to save you ( Mk 16:16; Acts 8:36-37 ); we are saved through grace alone by faith ( Eph 2:8-9; Titus 3:5 )
5. Opposition- people try to say Acts 2:38 means you must be baptized to be saved, no it is saying in this verse be baptized FOR, or because you have, as a result of to remission of sins, not to get remission of sins;
6. New testament saints baptized in Jesus name, and not Father, Son, Holy Spirit, because it says name, singular in ( Matt 28:19 ) not names, because in Jesus dwell all the complete Godhead bodily ( Col 2:9-10 ); either are correct!
